"Is that you Max?" I asked the abmoniation that emerged. "I think so..." the figure replied, "I don't think it worked, I'm still covered in fur..." I sighed deepily and looked down at my own fur covered body, unlike Max I did not have the typicaly brown fur that had slowly crept across the few of us who were still around since the accident, no for some reason I like my friend Fee had creamy colored fur. I'd always taken it as a sign that both Fee and I were destined for great things, that or nature had decided to curse the both of us with a cruel private joke. "I think we should call it a day for now..." I said to Max trying to hide the depression from yet another failed attempt. Max smiled as best as he could, his large fluffy tail sagging visably as he walked towards me. "What now?" Max asked vaguely. "The answer must be somewhere, it should be simple to reverse the mutations done to us, but I can't find the exact compound that will return us to normal." I replied angrily before staring deeply at the screen in front of me, "Max, come here a second..." "Yeah, whatcha want Frank?" He said before screaming in pain, "What the hell was that for??" he exclaimed taking his paw away from me and backing off. "Sorry Max, need a sample from ya." I explained briskly as I fed his blood into the tiny little computer sampling device. After a short time the computer beeped loudly. "What's it say??" Asked Max enqusitivly. My face dropped in horror as I read the information on the screen, "It tells me why I can't return you to normal. According to the computer this is normal for you, all of us we were never human in the first place, it's just been so long that we forgot where we came from..." Max squinted at me in disbelif, "So what am I, and what are you??" he asked. I tried not to giggle, this wasn't funny after all, but couldn't help it, "It says you are a squirrel, or at least descended from a squirrel. The computer had been working every time I've tested it on you, it has returned you to your original form...." Max lowered his head and pressed his warm furry body against my own. "We can't tell anyone this...." he whispered to me. I nodded slowly and agreed with him, "Yeah, there's no saying what sort of panic it would cause." "So we know what I am but what about you, and what about Fee, you aren't the same as the rest of us." Max reminded me. "You got a point there, let's see...." I said wincing in pain as I cut my pawed hand. Once again I fed the blood into the sampling computer and waited, it took longer then it had done for Max. Suddenly it beeped loudly announcing it's completion. "Here we go..." I said emphaticly. Max snuggled beside me and strained to read what it said on the screen. "Oh my...." I exclaimed in shock. Max slowly read off the screen, "Hy...oo...man..." Max read aloud, "Human?!" he screached at me. "You, you are one of the last humans!!" Max said smiling happily, "It's an honor ta meet you." he said chirpily. I shook my head and burried it into my furry paws. "See you were right all along, you are diffrent...." Max concluded.
